RADICALLY GREAT: LUKE 9:51-62
Introduction: the disciples aren’t great
” An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.” (Luke 9:46)
” Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” ” (Luke 9:18-20)
“He didn’t know what he was saying.” (Luke 9:53)
” “Master,” said John, “we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.” “Do not stop him,” Jesus said,” (Luke 9:49)
Having a Bigger Vision…
1) Jesus trumps TRIBE (Luke 9:51-55)
“As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. ” (Luke 9:51-53)
For consideration: What is your tribe?
2) Jesus trumps lifestyle(Luke 9:57-58)
“As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus replied, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.”” (Luke 9:57-58)
“For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.” (Luke 9:24)
Following Jesus and living in a hole in the ground is better than ignoring Jesus and living in “the home you deserve”.
3) Jesus trumps security! (Luke 9:59-60)
“He said to another man, “Follow me.” But the man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”” (Luke 9:59-60)
4) Jesus Trumps Family (Luke 9:61-62)
” Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say good-by to my family.” Jesus replied, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.””(Luke 9:61-62)
“Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”(Exodus 12:20)
” Peter said to him, “We have left all we had to follow you!” “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age and, in the age to come, eternal life.”” (Luke 18:28-30)
