MARK 14: SETTING THE SCENE

“If Jesus is your treasure you’ll more heaven and earth to bring your life into line with how Jesus ______ ____ to live.”

“”Now the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some sly way to arrest Jesus and kill him. “But not during the Feast,” they said, “or the people may riot.”” (Mk.14:1-2)

“While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.” (Mk.14:3-4)

1) TRUE FAITH TREASURES JESUS

Why does she do it?

“Its her way of saying, ‘Jesus you haven’t had ______ ______in my life but now I want you to be my ____.”

the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it…he went and sold all he had and bought that field.” Matthew 13:44

What has Jesus ever done for her?

Does she treasure Jesus because he raised Lazarus from the dead or because of who this leads her to think Jesus is?

What has Jesus ever done for us? Who is this man who…

  • heals sick people.
  • touches the untouchable.
  • calms a storm
  • walks on water.
  • Teaches with authority
  • forgives sin,
  • declares who gets to go to Heaven.

Mark shows us these things so we know that Jesus is ___.

“The Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mk.10:45)

The frightening reality of the gospel is that Jesus calls us to give up __________ we have for his sake.

“If anyone would come after me,” says Jesus, “he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it” (Mark 8:34-35)

2) TRUE FAITH TREASURES TRUE FAITH

“If you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Even the pagans do that.” (Mt.5:47)

“by this will all people know that you are my disciples – if you have love for one another.” (Jn.13:35).
